The central theme is the deterioration of life, which can be seen through the eyes of the characters and their miseries. The author exposes with impeccable detail the feelings of dismay and tedium that all his characters encounter. It is these feelings of unease and disquiet that generate the conflict between the characters and shapes the drama. And while the story seems sad, its relentless humor softens the ambush of its plot.
