The story that is told begins when Professor Ivan Ivanovich Niujin, husband of the owner of a music school and a boarding school for young ladies, enters a room with the innocent purpose of giving a lecture on the harm done by tobacco. In a disorderly lecture, he delivers an unpredictable speech, where, between pathetic and ridiculous, nonconformity leads him to reveal terrible evils of the soul.
